Frequently Ask Questions

1.

How can I read the electronic documents sent by HKIMC?

If the preferred delivery method is e-mail, HKIMC will send requested document as PDF attachment to e-mail. Adobe Acrobat Reader software is required for reading PDF documents. The software can be downloaded free of charge here.

Once Acrobat Reader is installed on your computer, most Windows-based email software will automatically open Acrobat Reader and display the .pdf file when you click on the attached file's icon. If it does not, you should try dragging the attachment's icon to the Windows desktop or saving the file in a directory, then opening it.

2.

How can I read the electronic documents sent by NLM ?

NLM will deliver the requested documents electronically as e-mail attachments in two formats: PDF and TIFF.

For TIFF image documents, Windows NT 4.0, later releases of Windows 95, and Windows 98 use Wang Imaging or Eastman Software's Imaging for Windows by default to open .tif files. With most Windows-based email software, you can click on an attached file's icon to open it. If you have an early release of Windows 95, you may find that TIFF files do not open automatically. You may have to download Imaging for Windows which is available free from Microsoft. Other image viewers are Irfan View32 (freeware available from tucows.hk.super.net; there are many other shareware viewers available at this same website) and Paintshop Pro 5.0. or above.

3.

Can I change my registered information ?

Yes, you can change your registered information under the "HKIMC User Information System". Firstly, please login to the "HKIMC User Information System", then you can select either "Change User Information" to change your registered information or "Change Login Password" to change your password (Remember to press the "Update" or "Change" button in order for the changes to take effect).

However, your registered e-mail is un-changeable under the system because it is used as your login name. If you want to use a new e-mail address, you should re-register one more time and inform our staff to suspend your old account.

4.

Are there any pre-requisites for using email as my delivery method ?

The typical document image file size is approximately 500K to 700K bytes. Thus, be sure the capacity of your email account is large enough to handle the documents you have requested. If the size of requested document exceeds the capacity of your account you may need to use other means to get an article.

5.

Why are there two options for requesting documents (Via NLM and Via HKIMC) ?

Requesting documents via NLM is faster and convenient, as one can simply tick the appropriate documents during one's document searches using PubMed. However, in some circumstances, you may need to use other search engines. In such cases you will need to submit your request to HKIMC. You may use either or both options, but please remember not to submit the same request via NLM and HKIMC.

6.

Is this document delivery service free of charge ?
